Colorado - Speak Up For Foxes, Pigeons
And Chickens Massacred In Windsor

Thirty-six chickens were being illegally housed at a property in Windsor, Colorado. All 36 chickens were killed by foxes because they were not properly protected. Traps were then set by a "pest" company, and now an entire family of foxes (father, mother and two babies), along with a second female fox, are Fox, now gonemissing and presumed dead. Some traps were baited with pigeons. A photo we received shows a skunk being trapped - this skunk was left in the hot sun several hours before he was removed and presumably killed. At least one raccoon was also trapped by the "pest" company. All because the chickens were not protected from predators as required by law.

The Windsor Town Code allows only 6 chickens on property in the town limits, and a permit must be obtained. It also states that the chickens must be protected with predator-resistant housing. The residents blatantly disregarded these legal requirements.

Even after reports to police, animal control and town officials, nothing has been done. Once again, these people have more chickens and they've now added ducks.

After watching the foxes for many years, one neighbor told us:

"I feel such a loss after watching this particular family for so very many years, and their ancestors before them for over 20 years, all living in harmony for over two decades! Who knows how many generations of these superbly adapted and evolved foxes have lived in this section of the Poudre River ... maybe back to the time the Indians dwelled here. It is the passing of an era for sure. What a sad, sad state of affairs. My friend has taken some lovely professional photos of their babies over the years. She too will be broken-hearted to hear the news. We are devastated."

IDA is concerned about the welfare and unnecessary deaths of many animals in this community.

What you can do:

Please write one short, respectful email to Windsor officials, asking them to immediately investigate and take appropriate action for any violations, and remove animals who are being housed illegally on the same property. If they are allowed to continue their current illegal activities, it will only result in more cruelty and unnecessary deaths of innocent animals.

We've included a sample letter below, but please compose your own thoughts and e-mail it to this string:

jvazquez@windsorgov.com, john@freymccargar.com, karnold@windsorgov.com, jplummer@windsorgov.com, jmichaels@windsorgov.com.

This will send your e-mail to:

  • John Vasquez, Mayor;
  • John Frey, Town Attorney's Office;
  • Kelly Arnold, Town Manager;
  • Joe Plummer, Director of Planning; and
  • John Michaels, Chief of Police.

Sample letter, but please put in your own words and add your own polite thoughts:

I write as a Colorado resident to ask that you immediately investigate the illegal activities of the residents on Stone Mountain Drive in Windsor who have been keeping more than the legal limit of chickens on their property without a permit, and without proper predatory fencing.

This situation has already led to the deaths of 36 chickens, at least 5 foxes, and probably a skunk, raccoon, and an undetermined number of pigeons. Now these people have been allowed to get more chickens, and they've added ducks. As a member of In Defense of Animals (IDA), I am very concerned about the deaths of so many animals on this one property, and the welfare of the animals who are held there now.

Many animals have died as a result of this situation. Not only are the residents in violation of the Windsor Code, they have acted irresponsibly and cruelly toward both domestic animals and wild animals.

Please let me know how you decide to address this. Thank you.

Sincerely,
