RMJfA- Casualties of Backyard Livestock Agriculture

Friday, May 13, 2011
Figuring out how to live with a pet can be a challenging experience,
just because animals are different from humans. Even in the case of
dogs and cats, which are common enough in our society so that
knowledge of their care is very widespread, figuring out their proper
care is not trivial. But dealing with a new kind of animal, like
chickens, ducks, or goats, can be a major challenge. If you try to
spread the acceptance and adoption of this kind of animal, a lot of
people are going to get it wrong. And if they are raising the animals
just for milk or eggs (rather than as companions), they will have an
INCENTIVE to err on the side of non-treatment or abandonment.
Veterinary care just adds to the expense of the eggs or milk.

Chicken Run Rescue in Minnesota runs into this sort of problem all the
time. They have posted some photos on their Facebook page. These
sorts of problems don't show up on the radar screen of city officials
because, of course, no one files a complaint. Who is going to
complain? The chicken, perhaps?

I have posted some concrete and recent examples of what happens to
abandoned animals at this address:

Denver will see this too, if this ordinance passes, whether or not it
gets officially registered as a "problem" for the city. There are
responsible chicken owners out there, but to allow chickens, ducks,
and goats as livestock is an invitation for problems. It may be
better than a factory farm, but they still suffer and die.

If you live in Denver, write your city council representative and
express your opinion about this ordinance. Track down your Denver
City Council person as follows: go to DenverGov.org, click on "City
Council," which takes you to a page where you can find a list of
council persons by district. Not sure what district you're in? Scroll
to the bottom of the page and enter your address in "neighborhood
maps" which will tell you what house, senate, and city council
district you live in.
