Miles' Girlfriend Spends the Night Posted: 16 Mar 2010 08:34 AM PDT
Miles and Riley hike together three or four times a week and they take us along for the ride. They also like to play in Riley's back yard which is protected by a big stone wall. I'm sure the wall is too high to scale, but I'm not so sure that Miles might not try to dig his way out. He has a history of jail breaks going back to his days as a puppy gansta up in the ABQ. Riley is staying with us for a few days as her humans are out of town. We've only had her for one night and it's already been quite an experience. Our house looks more like a giant dog house than a human habitation. There are dog toys and bones of various sizes and textures all over the house. Riley came with an overnight bag and Miles promptly pulled out all her toys and scattered them everywhere. Riley has been a good influence on Miles from the beginning. She was adopted from the High Desert Humane Society (if you check this site out vote for Chai in the photo contest) here in town at a good age and her humans have done a great job of socializing her. As a result she is teaching Miles that strange humans are OK and that they can be greeted warmly and openly. Miles is catching on. She also comes when called and last night at the Dog Park that was very helpful in retrieving our retriever. Riley brought her own food and her own bed, however, it appears that they like to share. Last night Riley was curled up in Miles' bed as Miles looked on in consternation. This morning as soon as we put their separate food in separate dishes they each ate the other's grub. I guess variety is the spice of a dog's life, too. It's really pretty easy having two dogs at the same time. They tend to keep each other occupied. This morning I was on a conference call and I could hear them playing nicely in the background. They do seem to have slightly different bathroom schedules, though. Very early this morning, about 3 AM, we were awakened by Riley's bark. Chris got up and took them both outside. Seems Riley might be an evening pooper whereas Miles is a regular morning guy. We'll be walking Riley right before bed tonight for sure. We've got Riley for about three more days and then Miles goes to her house for a few days. They are going to be seeing a lot of each other over the next few weeks. I'm sure some of you might be wondering how we are handling certain aspects of this budding romance. Since Riley is spayed and Miles is neutered we are letting them sleep in the same room unsupervised. That seems to be working out OK. After a day of non stop play, running and chasing, they are totally pooped out at bedtime. If only that worked with teenagers. |
