Heading to Colorado: TwiggyLand! Posted: 02 Jun 2009 01:33 PM PDT Week after next we'll be heading out of NY to Colorado. See, Dr. Larry isn't the only one who galavants about. Granted, a lot of his travel is to attend fun veterinary conferences... ours will be to do some business around the Denver area, and to visit a bit with the relatives. While we're at the relatives, we'll get to see how big Twiggy is now. Twiggy is my daughter's dog. Last year, Twiggy was a skinny puppy. You'll remember her as the pure-blood Greyhound my daughter brought into the house after her beloved Reznor passed, at Christmastime. Last year was hard on both of us - I lost my Carmie just before Thanksgiving, and she lost Reznor right at Christmastime. There was a whole lotta wailing going on back then. Well, Twiggy has been a delight - and a trial. She's a bit anxious ... and she suffers from separation anxiety, and she's big into coprophagia. At least, she used to be. After many hours and days and weeks of training, I believe she's overcome many of her more disturbing behaviors (like the coprophagia - not something you care to have the neighbor's commenting on when you're cooking out on the deck, on a lazy Sunday afternoon, you know). But, honestly, I've seen some recent pics of Twiggy and she looks like a HUGE representation of the puppy I remember. Like most Greyhounds, she's skinny, but she looks pretty imposing in the pictures and I'm wondering how my granddaughter, Miah, deals with that. Back in the day (a whole year ago) Twiggy sometimes got the better of 10-year-old Miah. My hope is that Miah has learned how to be "master" of her dog. While we're in CO, I know we'll visit the dog park...as we did last year. That will be interesting, too. Twiggy was so "tiny" last year, she was definitely not a dog any of the other dogs would worry about. Granted, from our visits to the dogpark last year, it's a friendly, open, inviting place...and none of the dogs misbehaved, but...I got the feeling that they very well knew Twiggy was a puppy, and they ran with her or played with her or ignored her, as a puppy. Kinda like the older kids in the house ignore the younger ones. I bet it's different this year. I bet Twiggy holds her own as a grown dog - commanding the proper respect. Now, I wonder if my daughter has taught her any tricks. As I said in an earlier post, I think Twiggy would make a GREAT Incredible Dog Challenge competitor. |
