Sent on behalf of Nancy J. Severson.Good afternoon,I am writing to let you know that I received your email and to thank you for contacting me regarding your concerns. We do not have a policy in place that states we house animals for only 10 days, after which they will be euthanized. It was an unfortunate miscommunication with shelter staff that has now been cleared up.The Denver Animal Shelter is a short-term shelter, as every shelter is designed to be short-term because Animals should be in homes, not shelters. We have to accept every animal that comes through our doors because we are not just a shelter, we are an animal control facility. Our goal is to get the animals out of the shelter as soon as possible through adoptions or transfers and we have more than 40 transfer partners that help us to do that.If we run out of room for adoptable animals, we offer them up for transfer and reduce adoption fees (as we recently have) in an effort to try to increase adoptions. For those that may not be immediately adoptable (treatable, manageable, or rehabilitatable) we will hold them as long as we can but rely on our transfer partners to be able to take these animals that need additional assistance our shelter cannot provide. Thanks to the work of staff and our rescue partners, the shelter's live release rate has increased 31 percent in the past four years, and recently achieved an 87 percent monthly live release rate.I hope this addresses you concerns.Sincerely,Nancy J. SeversonManager
