Here's a Pet Overpopulation Idea to Consider Posted: 18 Jun 2010 12:50 PM PDT
Most of us are responsible enough to realize that but many don't heed the call. Whether it's an education issue or a financial issue, lots of dogs and cats don't ever get spayed or neutered. Believe it or not an un-spayed cat and her offspring can produce 400,000 kittens and and an un-spayed dog and her offspring can produce 6000 puppies. That's scary. The California Veterinary Medical Board is testing a unique program to deal with the financial aspects of the overpopulation problem. They are starting a CA Spay and Neuter License Plate program to help offset the cost of surgery at spay and neuter clinics around the state. Participants agree to purchase a CA Spay and Neuter License Plate for $50 and the proceeds go to funding this program. The Medical Board is setting up a charitable wing to handle the funds and will then distribute them to organizations across the state that will perform the surgeries. Part of the proceeds will go to educational programs about the need for spay and neuter surgeries. The surgeries will be paid for by vouchers from the fund. This sounds like a great idea to me. Pet people can show their love of animals by buying a plate and help less fortunate pet owners provide the care their pets need. We need 7500 people to step up, however. The CA DMV won't start printing the special plates until they have that many on order. So, you readers out there in California, or those of you that know someone in CA, help spread the word. This program deserves our support. |
