Dog Fighting: A Monstrous Crime

RescueInkDog Sometimes you just have to take a stand. Sometimes you just have to stand up and be counted. Sometimes you have to shout it out to the world - and this is one of those times. Dog fighting is wrong! It's more than wrong, it's criminal. People who fight dogs should go to jail for the rest of their lives.

Over at Dogtime.com, Leslie Smith has an excellent article on a recent Dr. Phil show about dog fighting. I saw the show. I watched the last 20 minutes or so in anger and dismay. Yes, Dr. Phil was disgusted with the idiot he had on who tried to make dog fighting into a "sport"...and Dr. Phil had the terrifically wonderful Rescue Ink. angels on, also, but in the end, I agree with Leslie - the fool who sat on Dr. Phil's stage and insisted he treats his dogs well and that they "like" fighting, IS a monster. That's all. He's a monster! (Dr. Phil did not assert as much - which makes me like him a whole lot less, now)

As assuredly as any stalker or human predator is a monster, men (and women...I suppose somewhere there are women who participate in this cruelty) who promote and support and hide their depravity because they know what it really is - are monsters. Of the highest order.

Leslie so captured the show when she wrote, "Rescue Ink is an in-your-face band of tough guys who couldn't be more committed to helping animals in need. The irony is that the image of the clean-cut Rogers contrasted starkly to the tattooed muscle heads, driving home the point that hero and criminal can arrive in any form." Apparently I missed the part where one of the Rescue Ink bikers challenged the tough-guy dog-fighter-monster to a brawl...to no avail as show staff apparently did not want Dr. Phil's show to turn into a Jerry Springer episode.)Rescue-Ink-header

Another great thing about the show and Rescue Ink is that the mascot of this group is a pit bull. They get it. They know that pit bulls are NOT bad dogs. That pit bull terriers are wonderful pets. That these dogs do not deserve their reputation, any more than Dobermans or German Shepards, both breeds that have been maligned in the past.

Dogs are devoted creatures when treated with the care, respect and love they deserve. When people train them to fight, when people do not give them the right love and care, when PEOPLE do it wrong, it's the breed that pays the price.

Sometimes you just have to stand up and say, "No more. No more dog-fighting and no more Breed-specific legislation."
