Miles Goes on Vacation

Posted: 15 Feb 2010 11:52 AM PST

Miles-in-training We took Miles to Tucson for Valentine's Day weekend. We stayed at Loew's Ventana Canyon Resort, a swanky and uber dog friendly place. Miles got a special tag, bowl and treat at check in and they even have a dog "room service" menu. Of course, Miles eats only Purina ONE, so he passed on that.

We had a blast. Chris hit the spa, I tried my luck on the "Shoot Out", the best group bike ride/ race in the West and Miles relaxed in regal fashion.

This place is nestled in the mountains on the north edge of Tucson and blends right in with the desert. We took Miles on several hikes in the area and he chased Road Runners and almost got into it with a roving band of Javelina's. Good thing he was on his leash and Gentle Walker Dog Harness.

We had a grassy lawn right outside our room for Miles's exercise and bathroom needs. At one point yesterday Miles was entertaining five kids with a spirited game of throw the bone. That's where you throw his dog bone and he may or may not bring it back. He's a retriever but someone taught him "keep away" at a young age and he really doesn't want to give up his bone after he chases it down.Dr. Larry-plays-with-Miles-in-the-mountains

Miles was great in the room. He would stay there by himself when we were biking or getting a facial. Chris got the facial, not me, by the way. We took his bed, his water and food bowls and his beloved bone. He seemed very happy to hang in the room. He was never there for more than an hour or two by himself and he was very well behaved.

We could walk him almost anywhere on the resort property, except the golf course. Seems golfers don't like to play "keep away" with their golf balls. What weirdos.

There were lots of other dog families there, too, and Miles met many of them on walks around the hotel grounds. It's great staying in a place where they like dogs. We were going to stay at the way fancy Arizona Inn, but alas they don't get it when it comes to pets. For what they charge for a room you'd think you could bring an entire kennel.

If you are planning a trip with your dog check out DogFriendly.com. A quick search for Tucson brought up several hotels, motels and resorts including the one we stayed in.

I'll be here at the Conference for the next three days. I'm planning on looking for some interesting lectures on dog medicine and surgery. I'll report on anything I think you might like or that is new and different.
