A Sort-of Happy Ending for Sled Dogs Posted: 21 Dec 2009 08:41 AM PST While the following stories are appalling, they do come with a happy ending, of sorts. In each story, almost 100 sled dogs were rescued from certain death, and are now recovering in warm, happy surroundings. The reports say they will be available for adoption soon. I first saw this story on my local news, here in CO. The dogs our news reported on were from Colorado Springs, at a sled-dog racing track that was now closed. While the owners of these dogs face felony charges of neglect and cruelty, I have my doubts that justice will be served. The dogs were all friendly and eager to connect with the rescuers, and the video was heart-warming as well as heart-wrenching. I do not know how any human being can allow such living conditions to exist, or how they can't just admit they can no longer take care of the dogs, and give them up for adoption. I just don't get it. <sigh> Another report, in Quebec, tells a similar story. Over at the Waggery's Good Dog blog, the story shows rescuers from the local HSUS standing over a pile of poles and chains - to which the sled dogs they rescued had been confined, long enough to face starvation! Here's a quote that will bring tears to your eyes, "When we arrived at the scene yesterday morning we were prepared to experience some distrust or skittishness from these animals but as we approached they strained excitedly against their bindings to reach us and receive the love they so desperately desired. It is an amazing reward for an animal rescuer to be licked by grateful dogs who have been confined in a cage or, in this case, on a chain their entire existence." Those dogs, also, will be or may already be, up for adoption. (pic is representative - from Wikipedia) Tom and I may consider adopting one of the local sled dogs. They're at the local Pikes Peak Humane Society. Some, so the news said, will not be available for a few months and that works with our timeframe. We want to bring a new dog into a good home, where he or she will be loved and pampered, and the only one who might object to her is...the Wabby, of course. I secretly think the Wabby would like a new dog around. Maybe two. Maybe three. Or four. Ok, I'm getting out of control. Let's start with one, come spring. As I said at the beginning of this post, these are sad stories with somewhat happy endings. The best endings will come when all the dogs find forever homes. And that is what I hope happens. |
