The Book of the Year: SAVED - stories of rescued animals Posted: 20 Oct 2009 05:55 AM PDT
SAVED- Rescued Animals and the Lives They Transform is a book that will change how you look at and think about rescuing dogs, cats, birds, horses, and any other abused animal. I say this because the true stories in this book are so touching, they reach out from the page and gently embrace your heart, as if to say, "We are safe now, the world cannot harm us any longer. Will you share us with everyone you know?" And, the answer has to be, "Yes!" This book sat on my nightstand for many months. I was afraid to read it. I looked at it, at the wonderful picture on the cover, and I sighed over and over, knowing that to pick it up and read it meant tears would flow. There it sat, waiting patiently, sending little reminders now and then (subliminal messages, maybe) and finally, a couple of weeks ago I picked it up to read in the car while Tom and I were driving to a speaking engagement. This book is as much about the PEOPLE as it is about the ANIMALS. It's full of stories of every day people who risked life and limb, sometimes; people who spent their last dime on rescuing abused animals and bringing them into their homes; people who understand the human-animal bond better than anyone, because they live it. The horror in some of the stories is heart-wrenching, more so than the stories we see on TV. But, it's quickly replaced by happiness. Because the animals - dogs, cats, horses, birds - are so forgiving, they quickly heal and give their rescuers the love they would have given their former owners. One caveat - the book says birds are not so forgiving. Hmmm...birds, it says in one story, do talk, in sentences, and conversations. So fascinating! I applaud author Karin Winegar whose prose is lyrical, much like reading good poetry. I applaud Judy Olausen who took the outstanding photographs with in the book. I recommend this book to anyone who loves animals. And, I hope that I, too, can help rescue abused animals - in some small way. Because, it's everyday people who are the answer. It's our work and our attention that makes the Humane Society successful, that makes local animal shelters successful, and it's our insistence that animals have soul and deserve to be treated with care and respect, that will ultimately save them from the hands of terrible people who have no soul. |
