In the October 9th newsletter, Nancy wrote about this site by saying, "Just as you are obliged to create the paperwork that makes it undeniably clear who will inherit your possessions and assume guardianship of your children, spend some time determining who will take care of your pets." (also visit this post on "The Evil that Lurks in California"... wow, Californians need to be careful about foxtails.) Back to considering our pets in case of disaster. I've thought of that. Have you? I've not put anything in writing because, unlike worldly possessions and kids, I don't think dogs and cats become trusts of the state, if you fail to account for them in your will. And, I've tapped into my kids. One of them will take my precious Wabby, should anything happen to me. Just as I would take in their pets, in the same situation. But, maybe that isn't enough. I've been reading over the Pet Trust Law Blog and I'm learning a lot! I now think it's imperative to plan for the care of my pets - as I will certainly have more once we get to CO, just as I would plan for my possessions. (my kids are grown and on their own, so I no longer have to plan for them). Maybe I need to consider estate planning for my pets. The next best thing about the Pet Trust Law Blog, after its 'advice' on estate planning for pets, is the fact that it covers other territory, also. Like pet euthanasia, pet sitting, and power of attorney. If you read nothing else, read this post on "Will Pet Owners Become Pet Guardians". If the national movement Danny (writer of the blog and an Esq.) is right, this movement "could affect the relationship between you and your pets..." because a pet parent/owner is very different than a pet guardian. The AVMA )American Veterinary Medical Association) is strongly against it - read their statement on Danny's blog. I don't know what to make of it. But, as Danny says, I plan on keeping appraised of this issue. |
