Adopt a Shelter Dog Month

CarmiePortraitSmall October is well under way and for those who are not aware, it's Adopt a Shelter Dog Month.

I get dozens of news reports on the state of shelters in America today and they are hurting. The economy has struck more than humans - it extends to our furry friends and many are being taken to shelters because their pet parents cannot afford to keep them. That means shelters have an abundance of great pets waiting for new forever homes. These are cats and dogs that are loving, caring, likely to be trained as a family member, and ready to share all they can give with a family that is willing to give back - love of sloppy kisses required.

Over at Ron Burns' website (he's a great animal photographer) he's holding a contest to give folks a chance to win a Commissioned Pet Portrait worth about $30,000! Here are the details: read his book, Rufus Rhymes, to your adopted dog, record it on video and upload it to YouTube with "Reading Rufus Rhymes to Rover Contest Entry"... then tag it with Ron Burns and Rufus Rhymes.

The video here is a nice example. Ron has others on his site. Let's see what you can do. Come back and share with us, too.

Ron has all the other details on his site (like where to get the book, Rufus Rhymes). And a couple of videos worth viewing. There will be 5 Fan Choices who will go to round two, 5 Burns' Picks to round it out to 10 videos in round two. The winner gets the big prize, the commissioned portrait, and 4 runners-up will receive $100 Burns Gift Certificates. He has a blog, too. Nice pics for Halloween are up at the moment.

Contests are great ways to help out shelters. Adopting a cat or dog, is even better. Showing them off to the world is best of all.
