The Kitten Connection: Bringing a New Kitty Home

Posted: 22 Jun 2009 04:52 PM PDT

Carmie Since we're talking about cats...well, we were yesterday, I thought we'd talk little cats, today. You know, kittens. Don't let the cat out of the bag, but I'd LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to get a kitten! Somehow, though, I'm pretty sure the Wabby would have none of it. She's the reigning feline in the household (the reigning pet, actually, until we move and get a...dog...), so any attempts to introduce younger versions of herself are sure to be met with astonished disdain. As in, "What are you thinking, bringing in another pet? I don't need any company, thank you."

Well, she's that way. She gives me a steely-eyed stare when I ask, oh so innocently, "Wouldn't you like a little kitty to keep you company?" Then she digs her claws in my shoulder, in a friendly sort of way.

For those of you who aren't handicapped by a Queen kitty and might actually either have some kittens or be looking to adopt some kittens, here are some great tips from Purina Cat Chow® in their series on "The Kitten Connection:"

First, prepare your house. Kitten-Chow-Kitten-Connection

This includes slowly introducing your new kitten(s) to any other animals in the household. I remember introducing Wabby to Big Guy, the tiger cat we had back in the day. He was none too happy to see her...we had to keep her secluded for two weeks, allowing him occasional looks through a cracked door, and giving him time to get used to her scent. Then he became her knight in shining armour - protecting her from the dog. (and boy, was that Multiple_Cats-Kitten-Connectiondog afraid of Big Guy!)

Another tip from Cat Chow is to coordinate litter boxes. Dr. Larry has said more than once that you should have enough litter boxes to go around, and then an extra one, just in case. But you can learn more at the Kitten Connection link. They have videos on those first days at home, multiple cat households, litter training, and more.

A happy, healthy kitty depends on how well you acclimate him or her to your house. Personally, I need a refresher course, so I'll be looking at these videos. Let me know if you watch them and if they help you in your desire to be kitten-owned. (oh yes, they will own you...mark my words!)
