She sits still for the camera, but she seems leary of it. Interesting weekend with "the puppy" and the cat. The cat tolerates the puppy, on a limited basis. She's pretty vocal about the fact that Twiggy spent the night - two nights, in fact. Meowwww...MEOW.... However, the two of them are getting along nicely and this is good news. Now we can start 'thinking' about a new dog in the house. See pic of The Wabby, resident household feline, as she watches Twiggy bounce around the house. (she seems a bit worried that all that bouncing will land doggie paws too close, but Twiggy knows what's she doing!) Twiggy bounces like Tigger - it's quite comical. I'll try to catch it on video. |
Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association Posted: 23 Feb 2010 09:25 AM PST
I remember thinking to myself that I wished there was an organization that could come into an area like this and provide some basic veterinary care. Some vaccinations, de worming, spays and neuters could make a real difference to the people and their pets. I stumbled across just such and organization at last week's Western Veterinary Conference in Las Vegas. The Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association or HSVMA does great work in rural areas around the US and around the world. They were the first team to go to Haiti to help provide food and relief to the many animals that displaced or injured during that disaster. I read an interesting account from the HSVMA Director of Field Services, Dr. Eric Davis, about a summer spent providing much needed care on the Indian Reservations in the West. He didn't mention the Navajo Rez by name, but the did mention several others including the White Mountain Apache reservation in Eastern AZ, not far from my home in New Mexico. According to Dr. Davis, they spayed and neutered thousands of dogs. They also provided basic veterinary care, including vaccinations and de-worming for countless dogs and cats over the course of the summer. His team consists of volunteer veterinarians, veterinary students and veterinary technicians from all over the country. I hope they paid a visit to Chinle and other communities on the vast Navajo Rez in Arizona and New Mexico. I still have visions of an obviously nursing mother dog roaming our campground looking for food. I can only imagine what the situation was at home with the pups. It appears that the good work performed by the HSVMA is supported by donations and membership fees. Veterinarians and Veterinary Technicians donate their time and Veterinary Students get valuable experience and training through the work. Anyone can donate or become an Affiliate member for only $25 a year and you can keep abreast of HSVMA activities with their newsletter. It is obviously a worthy cause if you have a few bucks to spare for dogs and cats. |
